Deb introduced our speakers this week were Jen Morgan Anderson and Marci Hill (Youth Program Facilitators) from the YWCA and Andrea Laidlaw the (student success teacher) from Huntsville High School.

YWCA has so many projects for women. For a detailed list of all programs please visit their website at

These three ladies focused on two Youth Programs for both boys and girls.

  • Girlz Unplugged has reached over 2000 girls over the past 15 years in elementary schools across Muskoka. Girls come together for 12 weeks in a safe environment to explore issues that are important to them including: self-confidence, creative expression, body image, communication skills and relationships.

  • QUEST, A parallel life skills program for boys, has been running in Muskoka schools since 2006 and the YWCA has developed responsive curriculum's for boys in grades 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10. QUEST helps boys learn to become resilient and compassionate, to think critically about gender stereotypes and relationships, and to explore respect for diversity and individual strengths.

  • The curriculum for the boy program focuses on resilience, stereotypes, anger and strength issues to prevent woman from being abused.

  • Not all kids in the program are at risk, some just don't fit in school and need a safe place to be comfortable and talk

At this point the Quest Program at HHS has not received any funding. YWCA needs $3000 for both Quest and Girlz Unplugged. The money would help over 20 students. The girls program just started and the Quest program would start in February.

Children are referred for the program by teachers and guidance Counselors. Gord Mitchell was very passionate about the program and would like the board to consider funding this program. This program helps builds self-esteem, interpersonal skills and empathy. All Rotarian's that are interested in more details please check out the YWCA website. All Rotarian's are welcome to attend the Board meeting as well.

Pam was very happy to thank our Speakers for coming and letting us know about the wonderful work they do with the Youth in our community.
