Ron introduced our guest speaker, ‘a man who needs no introduction’. Drew Markham has been a member of our club for a number of years. Three years ago he owned and operated two dental practices in the area. Two years ago he was President of our club and sold the practices. One year ago he and his wife Tracy, jumped ship and relocated to Manchester England to begin a new chapter in their lives.
Drew confirmed that he had access to a UK visa due the status of his grandparents. Five years ago they thought about moving to England and he looked into doing some work with local practices but the paperwork seemed daunting so they delayed their travels until they sold the practices.
They moved to Altrincham, a suburb of Manchester about the time that Covid was rearing it’s ugly head. Their first few months were uneventful but eventually they got outside and were pleased to find that although the population was almost double Canada’s, in a much smaller landmass, there was lots of outdoor space and trails.
They proceeded to do day trips and longer to the Lake District, located towards the border with Scotland, as well as Cornwall and Dorset. Travelling with them was their trusty mascot, Dr Desoto, wildly recognized as a travelling mouse.
Not to be out done Drew decided to achieve a lifelong goal (or was it a booze fueled rash decision) of getting a leg tattoo, and who better than Kermit the Frog to be his muse
They loved the countryside and castles of northern Wales, especially the ‘fastest zipline in the world’ located about 300’ up in an active slate quarry. As you can see, Tracy and Dr. Desoto have rarely been higher and faster than this moment.
Their biggest trip took them to the isles of Scotland. Highlights include the Isle of Barra which hosts the only commercial airport that is dependant on tides. Also the isle of St Kilda on the outermost part of the Hebrides. It is a double World Unesco site and features some of the highest cliffs in Europe and large colonies of rare and endangered species of birds. The Isle of Sky had very unique rock formations and nearby on the mainland they enjoyed the Glenfinnan Viaduct a marvel of engineering and made famous in Harry Potter movies. The roads were often one lane which was a challenge at most of time, and more difficult when confronted with a herd of cattle.
One of their final trips was to Northern Ireland to visit Derry/Londonderry and get some background on the history of their relationship with England. As befitting Drew and Tracy, these discussions were best held in a local (really cool looking) pub.
During questions Hugh asked about Covid restrictions for their return but as they are regarded as UK residents it is not too onerous.
Rob asked about the driving and Drew informed that they bought a 2005 BMW to get around. At times the driving is very hairy.
He has played more golf than usual and really enjoys the courses.
Mary mentioned that she and Rashleigh honeymooned in Scotland and once came around a bend to face two very large horses. One proceeded to lift his head to allow them to pass!
