Rick Wearing introduced our speaker, Ron Kruetzer, President of the Huntsville Curling Club. With Ron was Debbie Kirwin, who needs no introduction to the club. She and Ron have been working together on a project to make the curling club more accessible. Ron went on to present a very precise power point show outlining the club's roots, dating back to 1900 and advised us that the club is a not for profit organization. 2025 will see the club celebrating their 125th anniversary and they plan some major changes to their structure to celebrate. Currently the club has 260 regular members and about 325 when youth curling is included. With regular games and bonspiels Ron estimates 2,000 unique visitors utilize the club In 1951 the building was destroyed by fire and the current building was built. It has numerous accessibility issues and discussions were undertaken to relocate and rebuild. The cost proved unattainable so the current building has been renovated to a certain degree with new roof and HVAC/Cooling units installed. The lounge was also recently reconfigured to allow for more social events to increase revenues. They have undertaken an 'Access 125' campaign to raise $125K by 2025. This is only the portion coming from the community that will go with some government support and members fundraising activities. The plan is to remodel the building front and change the main access point, instal an elevator and do other improvements to the washrooms and change rooms. Ron was not shy to tell the club that the purpose of his visit was to ask for Rotary's support for this project. He requested that we consider a 'one time' contribution of $5,250 or 3 payments of $1,750. This will be discussed at the upcoming Board meeting.
