President Ron opened the meeting with a 'Welcome and Toast to Queen, Canada and Rotary' – 6:05 PM
Guests: Karen Litchfield, Graham Henderson, Buck Miller
Rotaract Tree Project:  Pick-up is 1-4 PM, Saturday, June 5th. 4 volunteers are needed starting at 12:30 PM,  consider arriving early and staying when you pick up your trees. Let Jennifer Jerrett know.

Other Reports: Brandy – Rotary has been asked to provide a letter of support for Enliven’s grant application. No objections and Brandy will work with Jen to create a masterpiece that Ron will deem worthy of signing!

India COVID Relief Project update – Our Rotary District 7010 has to date raised $37,500. which is absolutely amazing and most gratefully received.  Most of this money has already been sent to the Essex Foundation and by now most of the tax receipts for individuals have been issued. The Rotary Club of Essex Foundation is now also working with a large international humanitarian non-profit service organization SEWA that will be purchasing the Oxygen generators/concentrators and shipping them to India.  All the money our District has sent and is sending will be matched 1:1 by SEWA.

Resolutions: In response to a request to all clubs to support a resolution regarding the proliferation of nuclear weapons there was an objection from the RC Bracebridge - We are being asked to vote on resolutions dealing with very complicated issues. Moreover the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is an international political agreement and we believe Rotary should not become involved in a debate about it given its clear “political” nature.
This has resulted in further discussion and a District Forum to discuss these issues will take place 7:00 PM Monday, June 7th    check your emails.

Today's Speaker
Paul Evans introduced the members from the Huntsville Mountain Bike Association (HMBA), a vision of two local individuals whom are very active in the community;
Buck Miller, who has been actively involved in all aspects of biking all over North America, Europe and Asia, and
Graham Henderson, a local High School teacher who is  passionate about the outdoors and mountain biking and the importance of both, on mentoring youth.

They realized that there was a lack of organized lobbying for the development and protection of public mountain biking trails in and around
Huntsville . The third member, Karen Litchfield, has had a tremendous impact on women's biking in Muskoka. She organizes weekly women's rides for all age groups.

The group advised that for many years there has been organized mountain biking throughout the area. Buckwallow in Gravenhurst was the only real public track and there is some concern it is closing. The HMBA has struck deals with Hidden Valley Ski Club and Deerhurst Resort to build trails on their property, which abuts and will provide a wide variety of terrain. Trails are currently being groomed.
The club has also has a private landowner allow use of a large tract of land off N Mary Lake Rd, referred to as Lance's Loop. Further trail development will follow.
Aim is to have an organized youth to adult program and both get kids on bikes as well as teaching all ages how to enjoy the experience.

Currently funding is covered by membership fees and private donations. They currently have a fundraising auction, accessible through their web site huntsvillemountainbike.ca where you can also sign up as a member.
To ride the trails at Deerhurst and Lance's Loop you need to be an HMBA member.
Expenses are for cutting and grooming trails, signage, grooming equipment and promotion. Now that they have some facilities they see growth in the club.

Given the Town's current focus on developing a new strategic plan the opportunity for a healthy, active lifestyle sport like biking should be at the forefront.

St Vincent Volcano Relief Info
Dolores and Tony Jardine presented information on the devastation that has occurred on the island of St Vincent, and surrounding islands, due to the eruption of La Soufriere.
  • St. Vincent economy is primarily driven by agriculture, which is dominated by banana production, and a growing tourism industry.
  •  Both of these have been devastated by the results of the volcano eruption.
  •  The country already had a poverty rate of 30%.
On April 9, the La Soufriere volcano entered an explosive eruptive phase with the first column of ash as high as 10 kilometers.

  •  A second explosive eruption was observed later that day, and a vertical ash column, which was estimated to have risen approximately 4km into the atmosphere, could be seen from the capital in the south.
  •  Ash from these eruptions seriously compromised the island as well as the island of Barbados, resulting in closed airspace and halting commercial activity.
  • After the first explosive event at the volcano site on April 8, approximately 18% of the population was evacuated to southern parts of the island.

Over 2 weeks there were an additional 30 eruptions, and major mudflows have impacted surrounding river valleys.
The extent of property damage is extensive and their agricultural ability has been severely hampered by destruction and a layer of ash that will cause ongoing issues.

After discussion a motion was presented by Bill Sibeon, seconded by Hugh Holland that a donation goal of $3,000 be created comprising $2,000 directly from the club and encouraging club members to make personal donations. We were advised that the Rotary Club of Toronto will be matching donations up to an amount of $10,000. International Committee Chair Jen Simpson will be sending an email with the full presentation and donation info.

Happy Bucks
