Zoom Meeting

Idle banter preceeded the meeting the highlights of which were Ron S showing off his 'Gramps' coffee mug and Will G introducing his new moustache!

President Drew opened the meeting with a welcome to those attending virtually, and toasted the
Queen, Canada and Rotary.

Quote of the day, from Theodore Roosevelt;
"If you could kick the person in the pants who was responsible for most of your troubles, you wouldn't sit for a month."

Drew thanked those who came forward with speaker suggestions. We have a few lined up. Specifically Staff Sgt Graham from the OPP will be with us June 10, and has asked members to let him know if there are any specific issues that they would like to be addressed. Send any suggestions through Drew.

Club Announcements

Thank You notes were received from both the Huntsville Hospital Foundation and Huntsville Hospice for recent donations made to support their efforts.

Drew advised that work continues on committees.  He provided an invitation for all members to continue with their existing committees, or perhaps try a new one – that information can be forwarded to Ron or myself.  Work continues on the budget..

A week Thursday (May 14) there will be a Club Trivia Night, via Zoom. Details and log in info to follow.

A reminder that at 5:30 Thursday May 7 the Satellite group will be hosting a meeting and welcoming MP Scott Aitchison as speaker. Log on details were sent out by Kim O'Grady yesterday. Contact her if you did not receive.

Brandy thanked the club for their support during the Girl Guide cookie drive. Given the Covid circumstances, door to door sales were not going to happen but with the support of Rotarians Brandy and Dave, over $200 was raised with some sales and some being purchased and donated back to deserving recipients; (sorry Dave the pic would not load right side up??)

Today's Speaker
Today we had the pleasure of PDG Ron Strickland reminding  club members about their roots and the impact the club has made on Huntsville, over the years.

Ron started off by reviewing the roots of Rotary, from Paul Harris's initial meeting, to Arch Klumph initiating the Rotary Foundation and to the formation of the Huntsville Club in 1934. Initially there was 20 members and 20 years later there remained 16 of the original group. He reviewed the many changes and many projects that the club has completed including the purchase of Hutcheson Beach, Pioneer Village (now MHP), and the construction of the Rotary Train Station, Youth Park, Avery Beach Pavillion, River Mill Bandshell amongst many other initiatives, both local and through the club's International outreach.

Ron did digress at one point to give us a look at his grade one report card. Needless to say the teacher's comments regarding the inability of Ron to concentrate, be in the least productive, or have any potential for success, were about as accurate as Trump indicating the 'all clear' for Easter! Asked later if he had ever gone back to his grade one teacher to let her know that he had overcome his total lack of potential to have a fairly productive life, he indicated all he knew was that the school had burnt down ... suspicious? You decide!

A few questions followed, one asking if the club was responsible for ongoing maintenance costs for capital projects they had built. The answer, in most cases, is no. The projects are usually handed over to the Town for their ongoing upkeep.
A few members commented on the excellent content in the power point. It is missing some of our very recent initiatives, but captures the club's history very well, and should be shown to prospective members as an intro to Rotary In Huntsville.

Happy Bucks

Mary was happy realizing that the Covid confinements had taken her back many years when she baked her own bread and was more self sufficient. Like being a young mother ... but no kids!

Brandy thanked Ron for the presentation, and reminded us that it was five years ago when she was in Nepal during the earthquake. She is hoping that when the Covid cloud clears the water filters, the club recently paid for, can be delivered.

Tim thanked Pamela for being very helpful in helping him acquire 4 new tires for his Jeep

George was happy to see that Len was attending the meeting from his tropical paradise. Len responded that living in a bubble wasn't as bad as it sounds, and he's never coming back to reality. Nina was heard to mutter - What else is new?

Jen recognized the efforts of the Stay at Home Gala and the funds that were raised for various charities in Muskoka. In response to her question Rob confirmed the event will have raised in the low $50K net. He did acknowledge the very inconsistent quality of the feed and the various tech problems, but accepted these things happen with new technology. Everyone agreed the dinner was excellent!

Hugh was happy to see that (at least from the screen sized shots) everyone was looking healthy and there was no visible bruising from spouse to spouse contact. Rob commented that there was no way Charlotte was going to hurt Hugh as long as she continued to take money off him playing Euchre. Hugh admitted that his most recent loss was as late as Wednesday morning, before the meeting.
