Today's Speaker

Guest Speaker Jennifer Simpson:  Update on World Community Service Committee Projects and HHART:
Jennifer gave an overview, with slides, of the international projects ongoing.  In Laos, water and sanitation; in Guatemala, dental and medical clinics; in Philippines, nursery school wash stations; in Nepal, a Disability Camp; In Manchichi, Panama, midwife training; plus funding for KIVA (micro loans), Shelter Box for disaster-hit areas; Save the Rain Water Project in Tanzania; and a “Rotary Connects the World” Gala.

HHART – Hispanic Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team:  Jennifer has been making humanitarian trips to Dominican Republic since 2013, to assist people there of Haitian descent, who were taken in as manual labourers for the sugar cane fields and then abandoned when these jobs ceased.

Jennifer showed slides of the people they work with, where they stayed, the work they do there and the activities they participate in with the villagers.  Areas of assistance were medical, dental, optical, pharmaceutical, literacy, a Montessori school, electrical/solar panels, construction, clean water, and mattresses.

It is difficult to make the projects sustainable, to maintain continuity of care.  HHART hopes to have a permanent building for a long-term presence in the area.
