Today's Speaker
Will Gibson introduced our guests: Aussa Pennial, Retirement Living consultant at Roger's Cove, Geoff McCallum, retirement living chartwell manager, and Jennifer  Houston, care coordinator / manager Home and Community care support services for  North Simcoe /Muskoka ( formerly CCAC).

Aussa outlined some of the red flags that indicate a need for help, such as lonliness, dining alone, missing meals, missing meds etc.  The move to a retirement home can result in happier, healther individuals within 3-4 months.
Geoff's job includes educating families as to what support is available and how to access it.  Ontario has changing demographics , with more seniors using hospital beds. Currently, there are 6 million seniors in Canada.  Retirement homes are partnering with agencies and available support sources.
Retirement homes provide trustworthy staffing, healthy meals  and activities personalized to their residents, providing social, emotional, physical and spiritual support.
Retirement homes can provide Independent Living, Independent Supportive Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care.
Independent Living provides housekeeping, outings, a la carte menu options, security  and convenience.
Independent supportive living adds laundry , PSW  services and medication dispensing.
Assisted Living and memory care adds help for residents with dementia , Alzheimers, with PSW support and nursing care.
There is a Health/Wellness manager at both Chartwell facilities to assess needs of new residents prior to moving in.

Jennifer suggested going to the snmhealthline.ca website to access health care info and professional services .
Also H CC coordinators can  help access services through the hospitals.
HCC provides LTC  access. This job includes  Assessment, eligibility  and wait list management for clients.
the LTC provincial rate ranges from $1891.00- $2700.00 per month.  There are 26 LTC homes in the North Simcoe Muskoka area.
the RHRA regulatory agency has valuable info on various retirement homes that the public can access.
The HCC has a call line open Monday-Friday 8:30- 5:30 for individuals with questions or needing help.

Discussion around the need for more staffing in LTC and retirement  homes and also reducing 4 bed rooms to semi-private.
