Club Announcements

President Ron called the zoom meeting to order with a toast to The Queen, Canada, and Rotary.  President Ron said that this was a happy and proud day as there has been an announcement that 47 countries in Africa have been declared as polio free.  Countless Rotarians in Africa and around the world responded to and stopped polio outbreaks, leading to a polio-free world.  President Ron suggested that anyone not wearing a Rotary pin or Rotary apparel, to donate $ 10.00 to Polio Plus.
ADG Brandy:  This is a very good day to be sharing great news.  Brandy explained that she went to Nepal in 2015, and she has a passion for International work.  She started work on a Global Grant application two years ago, but last year the grant was denied.  However, now it has been accepted for a project in Nepal. The application had to be changed to be more specific to 1 or 2 schools, one being an all-girls school, both in impoverished areas. The grant addresses humanitarian needs, sustainable outcomes, water, sanitation, and hygiene.  So much needs to be done there.  The current water standard is very low. Brandy thanked her Rotarian partner in Nepal for all his efforts as well.  Our club has ear-marked $ 5,000 for this project, which grows into $ 45,000 through the grant.

Brandy also gave an update on a District Grant for a goat farming project in Nepal.  Goat meat is a main source of meat there, and this will benefit 20 to 30 farmers; it is a very sustainable project. Our cost for this project is $ 5,800.00.  Brandy hopes to get back to Nepal in April 2020 and invites other Rotarians to go along.

Tim asked what changes were made to make the Global Grant acceptable, and Brandy explained that they reduced the number of schools involved and made it more to benefit girls.  Brandy will email the power point presentation, as members were unable to view it on Zoom.

President Ron noted that the Legion hosts a take-away Roast Beef dinner every Tuesday evening.  Please support.

George asked if we are any closer to meeting in person?  President Ron replied that the Legion cannot accommodate us yet.  Barb suggested that we have a picnic or Party-in-a-Box barbeque after the last planting, or at the Pavilion after the last day of painting.  Another suggestion was to have a brown bag lunch at the bandshell or at the Pavillion.  Brandy noted that the Bracebridge club meets at their Rotary Garden. The luncheon/fellowship committees will follow up.

Today's Speaker

President Ron invited Barb White, who explained that many of our members have had an interest in the Trans Canada Trail.  She introduced another enthusiastic speaker, who joined the Environment Committee and is going ahead with planning, Adrian Musters

Adrian Musters shared his power point presentation screen with members, for the Hunter’s Bay Trail Rejuvenation Project. Adrian did landscaping to get through dental school, so he sees what needs to be done as he walks the trail.
He discussed the trail, from the Centre Street Bridge to Orchard Park and on to Lakewood Park Subdivision.  He has talked with shareholders and people interested in the trail.
The Rotary Pavilion was built in August 2000 and only needs some cleaning up.
  Better signage is needed.
 Businesses are willing to contribute.
Some areas just need some new plants.  Barrier planting is required by the MTO fence.  Older wooden structures are in disrepair and need to be removed.  Muddy sections on the trail need gravel.  A new bench style could be chosen.

Some painting can be done in the next month, and an appeal will be sent out for volunteers.
Wilson’s Paint Store offered some donations.  Supplies will be required, and an appeal will be made through the media for donations and sponsors.
The first phase this year will cost $ 1,500.00
Phase 2 next year will cost approximately $ 7,500.00.
Adrian is looking into a Federal Grant for Community Improvement.
