Announcements:
90th Anniversary – Hugh Holland:
The three Rotary clubs in Huntsville are coming together to celebrate “Rotary in Huntsville”.  The event will be a stand-up, informal gathering featuring a video presentation, dignitaries, entertainment and the presentation of Paul Harris Fellow recognitions.  Also, a cheque presentation towards the club’s commitment to the Huntsville Hospital will be made.  Please REGISTER THIS WEEK, as catering arrangements need to be finalized.  Invite any people interested in Rotary to register also.
Interesting Fact:  The Rotary Club of Huntsville sponsored the Rotary Clubs of Bracebridge, Parry Sound, Gravenhurst and Haliburton.  Learn much more about the club on May 11.

President Len noted that the town will benefit from all clubs working together for the betterment of the community.  District 7010 has invited President Len to become an ambassador to The Rotary Foundation.

Huntsville Festival of the Arts/Rotary “School of Rock” joint venture was an amazing production. Kudos to the set crew from this club.

Dockfest – President Len for Jamie Thompson: Half of the bathtubs have been rented and most of the sponsorships have been sold.  Arrangements are going very well.

“Team Up to Clean Up” – Jennifer Simpson:  The Twilight club is following on Cam White’s environmental project to clean up areas in our town.  Sunday May 5 is the date.  Jennifer asked for suggestions for areas needing cleaning up, maybe along Ravenscliffe Road would be a good place.  She is asking for members of this club to volunteer to participate in this project.
Rotary Clothing – orders can be submitted to Noveltymann.

Foundation Funding:
Hugh Holland had the winning ticket, but sadly, he did not draw the joker.
There being no other business for the good of Rotary, President Len adjourned the meeting.

Today's Speaker

Mary Rashleigh noted that this club has been involved in the Student Exchange program for fifty years.  Our incoming student for next year will be Jorge (“George”) Andres Valdebenito Araya from Chile.  We still require one more host family.  Outgoing student Constance Jones and current exchange student from France, Basile Hayes were introduced.
Constance:  Constance is a Grade 10 student.  In February, she had her orientation for going to another country.  She had no biases on what country would be chosen for her, and she is going to Hungary.  She pledged to follow all the rules and is now learning about the culture of Hungary and will be taking language lessons.
Basile: Basile showed slides of his outings and adventures from his first eight months in Huntsville as an exchange student.  He is currently being hosted by Jennifer Simpson and her family.  He has been to a Blue Jays game, gone hiking, participated in winter and water sports, made maple syrup, eaten poutine and visited the CN Tower and the Aquarium in Toronto, and travelled to Ottawa.  He said that his time here is going by very fast.

PDG Steve Gavitt
PDG Steve Gavitt:  Steve is from Raymond, Alberta, but will be living in our area for several months, for his work as a missionary with the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ministry.  He said he became a true Rotarian during a visit to Uganda.  His club in Raymond is very small.  It is located near to a 13,000-member Indigenous reservation, and they work to impact the youth of the reservation.  From an idea of one of those youth, they now plant a tree in memory of anyone who passes away due to suicide or drug abuse.   Steve also spoke of his involvement with an orphanage in Uganda, and how they are now raising money to build a new facility on land they have acquired there.  It is a 3 to 5-year project and they have submitted documents for a Global Grant.  It was suggested that the Huntsville Rotary Club might support this grant.

Happy Bucks

Happy Bucks:
Mary gave $ 3.00 for her three weeks in Tobago, and $ 2.00 to thank Constance and Basile for speaking today.
