Introduction of Guest Speaker – PP/PDG Ron: Todays speaker is the Reverend Dr. Peter Wyatt. Peter is an ordained United Church Minister and the former Principal of Emmanuel College of Theology in Toronto. Peter and his wife Joan now live on Lake Cecebe in Magnetawan. Peter spoke to us about Edgerton Ryerson a much maligned Canadian. Ryerson has become a target of peoples anger over the Indian Residential School tragedy with his statue in Toronto destroyed and Ryerson University being renamed. Ryerson wrote a report in 1846 recommending the creation of Agricultural schools for the Indigenous population of Upper Canada. His report recommended 1. Voluntary attendance 2.Students could speak their own language 3.Cirriculum focused on Agriculture 4.Teachers to be knowledgeable in their fields NOT clergy 5. Overall goal was self sufficiency Ryerson had no role in the implementation of the Residential School system which occurred after his death. He has been targeted because his report was appended to Government vision of the Indian Residential School system. Thank you Peter for a very informative talk.
