Club Announcements
Drew opened the meeting with a toast to Queen, Canada and Rotary. Given the start time Mr Kirwin was a bit confused, alternating between sipping from both his pre-noon gin and post 1pm afternoon scotch

He followed with his "Quote of the Day' - from comedian Billy Connolly - "Before you judge a person, walk a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares. They're a mile away and you've got their shoes!"

President Drew gave a shout out to club members for supporting the Comfort Stations at the Hospital. A cheque for $2,100 was presented to the Foundation. This will assist with 'snack stations' being set up on both floors, and provide much needed energy boosts for the hard working healthcare staff. There will be inspirational signs and a recognition of Rotary's support. There will also be mentions on various social media sites.

A second shout out to Rotarian Christine Kropp and her associate Jo-Anne Jobson who have taken on the task of organizing complimentary lunches for staff,  for each week day for the month of April & May.  Currently they have Farmers Daughter (owned by Rotarian Michelle Shabatura), Pita Pit, and Tim Horton’s donating 200 meals once a week for the  month of April. They have Erika’s Bakery & Dwight Lion’s Club doing Mondays in May, and Subway on King William doing Wednesdays in May. Great work for a worthy cause!

Drew recognized Brent Finn and Jen Jerrett who have donated their air B&B unit for use by hospital staff.

Jen Simpson has proposed that talented people in the club who are creating art of any kind during these housebound times look at getting together their works, once this is behind us, and having an auction to raise funds for the hospital and food banks.

Drew announced that the District 7010 has suspended the Youth Exchange Program for the 20/21 season with the hope of re-instating it next year. The club was not going to participate next year in any event, as they could not identify a suitable candidate, so hopefully the break will allow for a successful recruitment.

Today's Speaker

Our exchange student Charles gave us a nice rundown of his recent trip to the Dominican Republic as part of the most recent HHART (Hispaniola Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Team) expedition, the groups 14th in all. He thanked Drew and Jennifer for bringing him along and it was clear throughout his talk that it was a very meaningful week for him. He also really enjoyed that there were three other exchange students on the trip as well.

Their main hotel was in Sosua by the Sea and they travelled daily to various villages.

Charles gave us a day by day recap of his activities which included working with patients to apply flouride treatment to their teeth and assisting Drew and other professionals with various dental and medical work

He also was involved with installing solar panels to some homes which gave light to people who previously did not have it

They visited a school that had a Canadian teacher who spends 6 months of the year teaching in very poor areas. Charles enjoyed being able to speak french with her.

In the middle of the week they had a day off to visit Puerto Plata, the largest populated area where they are and he took a funicular ride to the top of a hill

Other highlights include visiting the 'Monkey Jungle' which, in addition to having animals to view, had a great dental facility

On the last day they visited other villages, including one that featured many drug addicts and they saw some political demonstrations

Asked if he would go back Charles answered a definite yes. Other questions revealed that the medical equipment they have available to work with is limited but the Monkey Jungle clinic was a pleasant surprise, but no x-ray machine

In response to a question if HHART was seeing progress over the 14 years Jen S, who has been on 9 of the trips, suggested that the Haitians are still very much considered outsiders and marginalized by the general population, but within their own communities health and community organization has improved

Happy Bucks

Hugh H. - indicated that he and Charlotte have been isolating for a couple of weeks out west and a couple of weeks since they've been back. Unfortunately for Hugh he indicated he was in no position to donate a Happy Buck as Charlotte has been clobbering him at crib creating a debt of over $32.  Hugh did wish everyone a Happy Easter

Brandy V.G - happy to hear that Tony and Delores had finally made it back from Trinidad

Jim Hutton - happy to be back in cold, wet Ontario. They had a lengthy journey from dry, hot Arizona but are glad they're home.

Gord M - recognized Jen S for helping get out the word about the involvement of the HHS Robotics club in making shield to support our front line workers. Their initial goal of $5,000 was quickly upped to $10,000. As it stands to date they have donations of over $11,000 and are building masks for future use

Tim L - we learned Tim doesn't like pancakes ... but was very happy to hear Dana's dragging him to The Pancake House when they were down east resulted in their names being drawn for the Grand Prize of a fully paid trip for 4 to Banff. On the downside they have to take the trip in the next 2 weeks, and it's shut down, but hey ... a wins a win!

Ross K - he of the earlier cocktail dilema, recounted how difficult it's been to limit consumption given all the family and friend's cocktail ZOOM meetings he's been attending. He figures once the virus clears he's got a good two week's of drying out before he gets behind the wheel!
