Mayor Nancy Alcock said it was an honor to be invited to speak to Rotary, as an opportunity to get together and exchange ideas. She recognized some of this club’s contributions to the community over the years. Nancy identified her strategic initiatives from her inaugural speech a year ago, including being more collaborative and more inclusive, better transportation and housing, dealing with climate crisis, shortage of medical personnel, enhancing recreational facilities, working with youth with needs, environmental impact of growth, and better communication. She then discussed the progress that has been made on these matters. There are thirty citizen representatives on committees, and a leader on mental health. Housing is changing to smaller, more affordable buildings. An out-of-town developer has a goal of 100 new rental units per year. Tax increment savings can be put into effect. For walking safety, a new route has been developed from Fairy View Avenue across Highway 60 to Muskoka Landing. The town may be acquiring two new buses. Council is working on 96 recommendations for community infrastructure, and our own Peter Redwood sits on this committee. The walk-in clinic will be maintained and improved. Huntsville is the fastest-growing community in Muskoka. Last year, 630 building permits were issued. The mayor outlined their challenges as being in communications, upcoming budget, choosing priorities and cost escalations. President Len thanked Mayor Alcock for her presentation and invited her to speak to us again. He also thanked the Kiwanians and Lions members for attending our meeting today.
