Our Main Speaker of the Evening - Brandy and Dave Van Gelder, Jennifer and Brent Jerrett Spoke to us about the R.E.L.A.Y. (Rotarians Enhancing Learning for African Youth) Zambia Project which they participated in on March 3. It was an 8 day international project with multiple Rotarians in our District 7010 as well as supporting clubs in Africa. This is a 5 year commitment project. They provided facts about Zambia including that 16 million people reside there, 2/3 of which live in poverty, 12% have HIV and the average life expectancy is 51. They were seeking to expand the school into 3 classroom blocks which would accommodate over 200 students in kindergarten, grade 1,2 & 3. They also worked with the teacher and the children to develop programs to increase sustainability in their villages as well as educating the children in games like tag, duck duck goose, soccer etc. A needs assessment was performed and new water filters were provided as well as educational supplies and clothing. Each shared their own heart warming Rotary Moments while on their trip. It is a life changing experience that is highly recommended.
