Rotary Club of Huntsville     Meeting Notes Aug 7 2024
President Len opened the meeting by welcoming everyone.
A toast was made to the King, Canada, and Rotary.  The old Rotary grace was given, and Bill Sibeon led the Canadian national anthem.   The Chilean national anthem was then played while new exchange student Jorge sang along.

Mary Rashleigh acted at SAA, filling in for Gord Mitchell, who is away for his knee surgery.

Guests: Andrew Smellie; rebound exchange student Jude Little; inbound exchange student Jorge Valdebenito; Abby Lyons, mother of outgoing exchange student Constance Jones; Lynne Strickland, Nina Semper Ross, Beth Saunders, Bill Rashleigh; Nick Peroschy from the Morning Club; potential new member Charles Bridle.

Condolences to Will and Carol Gibson on the passing of Carol’s father.  Henri Audet is recovering from triple bypass surgery.  Gord Mitchell is heading off Thursday to have a ‘renovation’ on his right knee, his third. Has to be at the hospital at 6am and he really, really hopes that the Surgeon has had a good night’s rest.
Does the fact that all of these challenging situations comes from residents/neighbours of Lake Drive, seem a bit eerie??

Business: Len gave credit to Peter Redwood for organizing so many events, and suggested we should call it “Redwood’s Catering”.

Perogy Fest: Nick has tickets for the Morning Club’s Perogy Fest on September 21 at Active Living Centre. He asked for volunteers to help make the perogies on September 13 and 14 at Trinity United Church Hall.

Arrival of Jorge: Our exchange student Jorge Valdebenito arrived Saturday night into Canada and will be with us until next June. Mary presented a gift to Rob and Beth Saunders for driving to Toronto airport to collect incoming exchange student Jorge and having to wait for hours for his plane to arrive.  Mary also had gifts for Jorge – a Rotary cap and a Rotary jersey.

Dr. Adrian Musters updates the club on a number of recent initiatives;
  1. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony for Seniors will be this Saturday August 24.  Some volunteers are required, and all are welcome to the game.
  2. Benches on Fairy Vista Trail (8) and Hunter’s Bay Trail (30) have finally been completed.  Thanks to all the volunteers.
  3.
  4. Meeting August 21 regarding the Huntsville Memorial Gardens project.  Any interested Rotarians are welcome to attend.

Zoom meeting with the Barbados West Rotary Club – Len: on August 20 where the five Rotaractors gave a presentation on their recent visit to Bracebridge and Huntsville.

Muskoka Senior Healthy Living Expo  as noted by Rick will be held again this year, on October 3 from 1-5 p.m.  Volunteers to man a Rotary booth will be requested.

Muskoka Market Day – Peter Redwood:  “This is a BBQ project that has changed from Rotary providing Back Bacon on Bun as the sole  food provider to being one of 7 suppliers of  food as part of a food court with entertainment. The plans were scaled back from serving 500 meals to projecting the sales of 250 would be possible. This target was not achieved due to some constraints beyond our control like projected heavy rains and the hours of operation.  With expenses of $573 and revenue of $1081.00, the profit was $508.
I would like to thank both Dan and Bill P for their support prior to the event as well as during the event. The club now has a duo, Bill S and Charles, who not only talked up Rotary but sold food to people who were not hungry.   Liz and Mary looked after drinks. Bill P., Len and Gord made sure we collected the money.  Of course, this was all possible through the excellent cooks, Will, Bryan and Ron who did an outstanding job of cooking both thawed out and frozen bacon. Supporting the entire meal was Rob, who was our runner.
This BBQ project was brought to the club and encouraged by Rick and was an excellent opportunity to help The BIA and put the name of the Rotary Club of Huntsville in the public eye. Thanks to all.”
Within a couple of days of coming to Canada it became apparent that Jorge was not really an exchange student but was secretly brought into the country under the foreign student program so that he could work countless hours for Redwood Catering!!

Host Family: New inbound exchange student Jorge’s first host family is Jamie and Lynne Thompson.

Today's Speaker

Guest Speaker Introduction -  President Len: We celebrate youth and the exchange program. We have been sending and receiving students on this program for fifty years. He acknowledged our 'rebound' student Jude Little, our 'inbound' student Jorge and Abby Lyons, the mother of our 'Outbound' student  Constance.

Guest Speaker - Jude Little:  Our inbound student Jude Little gave a presentation on his year in Belgium.
Jude showed off his jacket with many pins from his travels.  He gave a very big thank you to Rotary for the experience.  He had a slide show of his adventures.  German, French and Dutch are spoken in Belgium and although he was not a language student before going there, he seemed to have learned to speak French quite well.  He loved Ostende in Belgium, and outside of Belgium he went to the Alps, Berlin and Paris.  Some of the many skills he learned were how to write in cursive, to speak French, and to travel by train.
He showed photos with his new friends and explained his experiences.  He participated in a half marathon, played volleyball and soccer.  He visited many museums through which he learned a lot of history.  He also visited the Belgium parliament. Jude did not get very involved in his local Rotary club there, but he did participate in Rotary activities through his friends’ Rotary clubs.  He said that the dress code at Rotary club meetings in Europe is much more formal than here.
Mary presented Jude with a Rotary jersey and invited him to volunteer with our club projects and he said he would like to do that.
