Introduction of Guest Speaker – Past President Barb White introduced Katharine Strang from One Kids Place. The New Project committee is considering this organization as a youth project. Katharine is a Development Officer in the Development and Community Relations Department. Katherine brought new information to share with us.
Katherine Strang thanked the club for inviting her back. During Covid, all One Kids Place facilities had to close except for rare situations. They have done fundraising to help buy equipment to carry on with therapy. They have now secured a new 3,900 square-foot location in Huntsville at 37 Campus Trails.
One Kids Place is a treatment centre throughout Northern Ontario providing services for autistic children. The Ontario government funds part of their services, the rest is by fundraising.
Children with autism present in many different ways – some are hyperactive, some are nonverbal, some may have sensory issues. Each case is very individual, and a plan is needed for each child. Many resources are required for these children.
A Snoezelen Room is a therapeutic environment for calming and/or stimulation, and they want to build such a room at the new Huntsville location.
Katherine showed a listing of their wish list for the Huntsville location.
Questions/Comments:
Hugh asked how many children are in their program. There are 45 locally, and 1,400 in Muskoka. There are more children on waiting lists.
Peter R asked if the specific equipment shown is necessary. Yes, due to insurance liabilities.
Bill P asked what equipment can be transported to the new facility. Two pieces will be moved, an infinity wall and some tactile toys.
Gord inquired as to the size of the new space. The new room is a perfect size at 11 ½ feet by 14 feet.
Jamie: The New Projects committee is very interested in One Kids Place and they will look at this organization in depth and bring a recommendation to the board. He thanked Katherine for bringing her information to the club members.
