Today's Speaker
Youth Exchange is a very important part of what we do as Rotarians. The Youth Exchange committee has brought back a few of the Students we have hosted over the years so we can catch up on their lives
Viktor Ozeg:  He was happy to see old friends.  He said all his hosts gave everything to him during his time in Huntsville, and his time here changed his life and it was the best decision he made in his life.  When he returned to Croatia, he had to complete his last two years of high school, and then he went on to university to study Applied Social Sciences with a major in International Relations.  After receiving his degree, he went on to do three more years to obtain his master’s degree.   He said that he attended workshops on improving his personal skills and he now has a full-time job.  He thanked Rob for introducing him to cultural events.  He has gone back to playing the saxophone in two bands and is still involved in sports.  He joined an Interact Club while in high school and is now in a Rotaract Club.  Viktor hopes to visit Huntsville again in the future, along with his girlfriend of six years.  He was so happy to be at the meeting and hoped to stay in touch like this more often.

Helmi Kivimaa:  Helmi prepared a slide show with pictures depicting her life since leaving Huntsville.  She thanked the Rotary Club and especially her host families.  She was very grateful for being a member of these families.  She said that returning to Finland was difficult, but she finished high school.  Her family hosted an exchange student from British Columbia.
The spring of 2017 was very stressful for her, as she studied nine hours a day for two and a half months in order to pass the entrance exam for acceptance into the university of her choice where she wanted to study economics. She graduated from high school that spring and was accepted into the university she wanted, and actually returned to Canada that summer.
She was involved in an international affairs group at university and went to Sweden for two months as an exchange student.   She has graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a specialty in Marketing. She has one and a half years left to complete her master’s degree.  She ran her first marathon last August.
Helmi showed photographs of her family, noting that all of her siblings have been exchange students and thanked members of the club for listening to her presentation

Rebecca Vestergaard: Rebecca had also prepared a slide show.  She thanked her host families from her time in Huntsville.  She started high school when she returned to Denmark and graduated in 2019, and then took a year off to attend a Folk School, a Danish school where you live in a house with twenty other students and take classes. Her main class was in in journalism, but she also took pottery, creative activities, agriculture and others.  For the journalism program, she travelled to Israel where she had many interesting experiences.  She started university last September, studying Political Science.  Her classes have mostly been online from home, but she looks forward to the full university experience soon.
Madeline Gosset
Madeline is in her 3rd year of Psychology in Belgium and will have her Bachelors degree by the end of the year She will be doing an Internship in the African country of Benin and then back to do her Masters. She had a new baby sister on Dec 23rd. She looks forward to visiting Canada again when Covid is over.
Andrea Bonafini
Andrea is at home in Italy in his first year of Engineering. He has not been able to travel outside his village during the pandemic.
In his spare time he is renovating a home with his brothers and sister. He got his drivers license and has access to a car but of course can go nowhere. He did get paid by his friend for a bet that he would not cut his hair while on exchange and now he just keeps it longer anyway.
