 Anniversaries
Two year club membership anniversaries were recognized for both Nicki and Suzi (this really is her day!

Len's Corner

Len's Corner

Len continued to fill in for Ron in the very important role of making many of us aware that we lack knowledge of the who's, why's and where's of Rotary International, but ... Len threw such lob ball questions at us we got a bunch of them right. District number, who is our Pres, who is the RI Pres, who is our ADG. We nailed them all!!
We shouldn't get to comfortable though as there is a rumour Ron could be coming back stronger than ever!
Club Business
Nickie announced that the auction was fast approaching, December 2 to be precise, (she is working on Redwood time) and reminded us that there are only 4 months until Christmas!
Lists of prospective donors are being prepared and will be sent out to club members for review. If you see a correction that needs to be made advise Nickie. Beside each donor is a Rotarian who is responsible for making the pitch. It is suggested that you diplomatically try and get a minimum $50 donation so that we don't end up combining donors. Also our overall space in the flyers and TV does have limits and we want to maximize revenue during the auction.
New members will get a list so if you don't see your name we will not forget you!
Deadline to get your lists in is September 26 (Redwood again). Kidding aside there are a number of steps required once we know the donation, getting it input into the system, preparing the web site and the flyer and it all takes time so please work towards that target.

Cam White updated us on the HPS playground project. If you haven't seen it drive by and have a look. 90% complete with the special flooring going in next week. Should be good to go by school start. The installing company has done about 100 of these projects this year so we're not alone. Although we were only one part of the overall project we hope to get some visible Rotary recognition at some point, and there will likely be a dedication/opening in the early Fall.

It was nice to host Kirsten and Bernhard Kugel from the Rotary Club of Aachen Germany. Bernhard said this was the first time he had done another club visit. He was prepared though, as he presented his club flag to President Kim and she reciprocated with a flag from our club.

ADG Brandy reminded us about the upcoming District Conference at Deerhurst Oct 18-21. Kickoff is Thursday which may involve a golf game?? and then Friday will involve an organized tour of Huntsville. This will include showcasing a number of our Rotary projects around Town. The loquacious Gord Mitchell will be (one of) the tour guides and if the bus is not back by midnight we have promised to send out search parties. Also FRiday night will be a 'campfire' featuring some local musicians and we know even Gord will stop talking if there are smores available!
Saturday night is the Gala this year with an Oscar Theme.
Through the weekend the seven ADG's will be hosting seven social rooms. We understand there may be some Wine Excellence product to be sampled at various times (thanks Brent and Jen)

Today's Speaker
It was Susanna Judith Lahvicka's (aka Suzi) turn to give us her classication talk, and she came bearing gifts ... if you could handle the True or False response to some of her questions.
Suzi started by informing us that her parents were refugees who defected from Europe when she was a young girl.
Turns out that she was a bit of a strong willed child (a shock to us all) and at 5 walked out of school because they confiscated her granola bar, resulting in a search party being formed (take note John. Do not deny this woman)
Suzi was married at 20 and managed 'Silk & Satin' lingerie stores
She went on to become the youngest No Frills franchise owner when her and her husband took over the store in North Bay
Through the No Frills organization Suzi went on trips to Mexico where the group helped rebuild a school which whetted her appetite for outreach
She flashed a picture of her now family with husband John and said they were her 'rocks'. She has 4 children now, two sons from her first marriage and two daughters from John.
As we all know Suzi is an active and important contributor to our club participating as Chair of Youth Exchange, and being involved in our Social Media, the Echo and the Auction Committees
Thanks Suzi for all you do!!

Happy Bucks

Gord Mitchell announced that the Robotics Club was having a scrap metal and bottle drive this weekend. You can contact Gord and he and KIera will be glad to pick up donated items to support a good cause.

Rob announced that Friday Aug 17 would be his last Algonquin stage announcement and he is recognizing his upcoming 'retirement' by going scuba diving to Tobermory with Brandy/Dave and his friend Gary

Katie gave us an update on Jocelyn. She is undergoing chemo treatments and is in good spirits. Given her weakened immune system she has to avoid contact with crowds for a while and she will not be at meetings until she beats up on some of those bugs

Apologies for others that gave Bucks. I was so excited to give my donation, and have my say, I forgot to write any others down!!

The Joker is running
This was Suzi's big day and it got even better when her ticket was drawn for the Foundation funding. With a one in fifty chance of winning her odds were not great and the Joker remained in the deck.
